How I Imagined this Collection
What is a collection? This is the question I have been asking myself since I first started designing jewellery. To me, the act of collecting is bound up with remembering, but it is also about imagining. What we choose to bring with us and wear has the power to remind us where we have come from, and helps us to project into our imagined future.
I began by collecting things that felt solid because they helped me to stay strong, things that were beautiful because they made me feel better, or things to help me summon courage because they were pure. It was like the road I was on – one filled with pot holes and puddles, mud and dead ends – was also full of hidden gems just waiting to be discovered. When I found one, it sparked my imagination.
What I carried with me represented the things I never wanted to forget; they embodied a gentle voice in a moment of darkness, recalled a helping hand when the load was too heavy, or sparkled like a glimmer of light that showed me the way. Each of these moments held the key to my future. To quote Steve Jobs “You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in the future.”
Because I am a designer, my BYOS collection was created from what I have learnt. It was something I wanted to share. If I was going to make anything, it would have to have substance and meaning. So I set about distilling each moment, each positive memory, into a simple representational form. I was making talismans.
Each element of this collection celebrates different aspects of success. Hours were spent finding ways to engrave the subtle letters of S U C C E S S on this bar. It had to be right because it meant so much. In the making I realized that I was trying to define my own template for successful living, one that is represented by the BYOS collection. I broke it down into five thoughts:
SELF-BELIEF – be bold, be brave, be you – you are stronger than you think
OPPORTUNITY – be open, be ready, believe – life is full of possibility
BALANCE – rest, strive, play – learn when to hold on and when to let go
LOVE – be kind, be generous, be love – embrace the world around you
HAPPINESS – feel the joy, wear your smile, follow your bliss – create your own sunshine
Everyone’s definition of success is very personal, but sharing my version was a way of celebrating all the wonderful gems – diamonds and pearls of wisdom – that helped me on my way. Inbuilt into the BYOS collection is the positive psychology that underpins success, a story that is still evolving, a conversation we all need to have.
All I can do now is invite YOU to share with us your own stories of success and keep raising the bar…
And remember to Be You.
