HOW TO: FIND YOUR OWN FLOW
NOTES ON SPIRITED PURSUITS: THE IMPORTANCE OF LETTING GO & FOLLOWING YOUR HEART
We are still celebrating #MentalHealthWeek2018 in style–with a new blog post!
This special week has brought lots of brave and amazing stories to light. It’s fantastic to see young people sharing their experiences of mental health struggles, of how they are coping and healing, and challenging the existing stigma around mental health issues. Charities like Jigsaw provide an online platform for young people to access mental health services and prioritise their feelings.
BYOS is an innovative brand committed to supporting young people who are going against the flow and differentiating themselves from the crowd. Our New Success Collection is expertly designed to fulfil that vision. We are delighted to introduce the Purple Little Bar of Strength to celebrate all you free spirits, paving a new path in the world for yourself.

GIFT YOURSELF WITH SPACE: TO BE YOUR OWN SELF
Being authentic is a challenge for young people growing up surrounded by inescapable ideas of who we SHOULD be. So making the option to simply allow ourselves to be– and grow into who we are– without limits and rules is a radical notion for the younger generations, especially when it comes to our future. Most people grow up around a cloud of expectations, of being told different stories of what is possible for them to be or do or achieve in the world.
This sort of ‘interference’ is frankly unavoidable, and more so, the advises and impositions on our sense of identity that arise from our community–be that our parents, older relatives, teachers, mentors, and wider connections on social media– are meant to be used as useful guidelines and examples of what we could be. The stories and pictures of various identities and lives that we are exposed daily are by no means an exhaustive (or exhaustible) range of what life we can have.
They should not limit our range of possibilities.
Rather they can function as the stepping stone from which we start to dream bigger, and open our hearts to the myriad possibilities of who and what we can be. So let’s do ourselves a massive favour.
Let’s gift ourselves with space to explore endless options wherever we can, in the journey to discovering our authentic selves.
GIFT YOURSELF WITH SPACE: TO BREATHE
The tricky thing with following our hearts, is that we first need to know what our intuitions and feelings are trying to tell us. Simply put we need to get in touch with our emotions in practical ways. We need to breathe deep, with intention, and to stop avoiding what we are feeling.
Stop drinking, smoking, scrolling endlessly, shutting ourselves off in order to escape uncomfortable feelings.
These habits limit our ability to work through our expectations, hurts, resentments, anger, griefs and desires, basically switching off any chance we get to know ourselves better. It is also a burden of repression that can weigh so heavily on us and cut short our very breathe.
That’s why it’s so vital to breathe through our feelings, it sends our brain messages that we are trying to sooth our nerves, to lighten our bodies by letting go of tension, stress, and often an overload of information. It is okay to let go of expectations, to gift ourselves with space to take in more air and take up more space with each inhale.
GIFT YOURSELF WITH SPACE: TO BE YOUNG
The journey to self discovery is easier to undertake in ones’ youth. Not just because there is usually a safety net of family, friends and school for support and to fall back on, but also because one is not excessively burdened by familial and financial responsibility. Thus we can take advantage of this ‘primetime’ to create the life we want for ourselves.
Once we begin to shake off the need for the approval of certain people we can create freely. Instead of thinking: ‘I need to be like this person or that person because they are so likeable and easy to understand;. Then we stop creating from the heart. We change our craft to suit the palette of the ‘approvers’. We wait around for them to notice. We put our identity, our potential and our power in someone else’s hands.
Sometimes being different also means being difficult to manage and that’s okay.
We are learning what we are not, we are making space to find our passions. We are uncompromising in our desires and efforts to live boldly, while we are still alive and young.
GIFT YOURSELF WITH SPACE: TO TAKE RISKS
This time of our lives is also a perfect time to learn to allow ourselves to make mistakes, to be open to new challenges and different opportunities, to see taking risks as a chance to grow and learn. To accept and move past disappointments.
And to collaborate rather than compete. So that we can evolve our thinking and mix and match ideas with diverse types of creatives and communities.
GIFT YOURSELF WITH SPACE: TO DEVELOP GOOD CHARACTER
The free flow of creativity can be held together by character. Good character that prioritises respect, compassion and accountability.
Character is built by learning new skills, striving to improve our abilities and being willing to work hard and to better ourselves through dedication.
By focusing on developing our own sense of reliability, we endow ourselves with greater freedom to be our authentic self.
SO ARE YOU BRAVE ENOUGH…
To be a pioneer? To embark on spirited pursuits? To take on the responsibility of living a transparent and unapologetic life? To embrace the challenges and impact of doing your own thing?
There is no denying that making the decision to follow your heart is neither light nor easy. there is no doubt that growth comes from taking hard steps to be the best version of yourself.
Wearing the purple success bracelet on your wrist will remind you always that you can be your own version of success. So gift yourself with space to be fulfilled, and to be free.
